5 Outdated Tips To Seal Your Diving Mask Until Now

  1. Try thinning out the mustache. A mustache that is too thick will definitely not provide a proper seal.
  2. Trim the mustache area below the nostrils and the lip area to try to create a bare area on which the mask may seal.
  3. Shorten the length of your mustache like the pencil thin mustache. Doing this may allow enough of the seal to actually make good contact with your face.
  4. Make sure that your mask has a quality silicone skirt and thus remains pliable in a wider temperature range than other materials. Masks using Siltex or PVC will stiffen up in cooler temperatures which will negatively affect their sealing capabilities.
  5. You may have heard people talk about putting petroleum gel on the mustache. This is something that you do not want to do as it will interact with the silicone of the skirt and cause it to deteriorate. Most greases or waxes, like ChapStick, can deteriorate the mask skirt materials, as well as harm the marine eco system.
  6. If you have tried all of the above without success, your choices would be limited to dealing with water in your mask or just shaving off your mustache completely. Until now...
  7. Snorkel Seal® Moustache Barriers are the first-of-its-kind solution for snorkelers and divers with facial hair. It helps eliminate mask leaks caused by mustaches— with no shaving, no messy petroleum-based products, and no environmental harm.

Mustaches & Mask Leaks: A Real-World Lesson in Seal Failure

We received a story about a male customer who had purchased a snorkel mask from an online store a few months before his tropical holiday. He had tested the mask in a pool and was initially happy with the fit. However, about a week before his trip, he called to report that the mask was now leaking badly.

After the store walked him through some basic troubleshooting steps without identifying the issue, they invited him to visit their store in Rye, Victoria. The moment he arrived, the problem became clear: he had grown a bushy mustache since his original pool test.

For those unfamiliar, snorkel and dive masks seal against the face along the area between the upper lip and nose, and across the cheekbones. Any disruption to this seal—like facial hair—can lead to water leaking into the mask. Of all facial hair, a mustache is the most likely to interfere, since beards typically don’t extend high enough to affect the skirt’s seal.

There are a few solutions to this problem... With #3 being our #1 solution.

1) Shave your moustache.

2) Use a food-grade silicone grease - requiring continuous applications.

3) Apply Snorkel Seal® Moustache Barriers. Where you'll get no goopy-greasy mess. No damage to mask skirting. No harm to marine life. And best of all... You rescue your mustache!

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Scuba Seal and Snorkel Seal?

Both Scuba Seal & Snorkel Seal contain medical-grade, skin-safe, latex free, hypoallergenic, irritation free waterproof adhesive. However, it's the adhesive that really sets them apart.

Because snorkeling involves repeatedly removing and wearing of the mask, Snorkel Seal uses a stronger, single-use adhesive. This ensures maximum seal integrity and comfort during your entire snorkeling session, even after repeated water exposure.

Does the adhesive contain latex or anything harmful?

Our products are latex-free, hypoallergenic, and irritation-free. It has been approved by the US FDA for skin application. Bio Comp 10993 / Patent Pending
